Haiti through the Eyes of North Broadway UMC MEET

For some of the members of the North Broadway UMC team, traveling to Haiti earlier this month was a brand new experience, while for others it was a homecoming. Each of them, though, returned with a new perspective.

“It was a really moving experience,” commented 17-year-old Cameron Atha. “We have never seen that kind of poverty before, and it was special for us to see so we could put our lives into perspective,” she said on behalf of her and her sister Chelsea’s feelings upon returning.

The group took some excellent photos, and we want to share with you Haiti through their eyes. Thank you to Cameron, Chelsea, Hallie, Mariann, Michele, Mercedes, Angela, Daniel, Marcus, and Grayson for spending a week in Haiti, for sharing your compassion with the children, and for opening your hearts and minds to all that the Haitian community has to offer.

When the group first arrived, they celebrated Grayson Atha's birthday. It was very special for him to celebrate in Haiti as he was one of ICC's founding members!

The team really enjoyed playing with the children at Grace Children's Hospital and being able to show them love and care by holding them. Here, Mariann holds one of the children in the inpatient ward, and below Daniel holds another.

Cameron and Chelsea said they both loved meeting her because she was so close in age to them. They commented that Cynthia smiled so much and was so loving despite her situation, and that made them think about a lot of the things they have in their life that they may not need in order to be happy.

The group made a trip north to the Jolitrou clinic where they held a vacation bible school session with kids from the rural area. Group leader Marcus Atha said that this was a very special time for the team to connect with and play with the children.
