This is our last day in Haiti, and we spent it the way we like best-- with children. This morning we went to Mother Teresa’s Sisters of Charity orphanage just down the street from Grace Children’s Hospital. Oh my. About 150 infants and toddlers live there in rooms filled with cribs, one after the other after the other. Often parents will bring their children when they cannot feed them, but visit daily to hold and feed their children. We were there when parents were holding their infants, feeding them, sitting on the floor and rocking them in their arms. Then, a bell rang and it was time for them to leave. Watching them separate from their children was really hard, and a cry in unison went up as all the parents left. We tried to hold and console and ease their distress. It is amazing how we each latched onto infant after infant as instant mamas doing what comes naturally. Praise God for these holy moments. We went to lunch where we have often eaten, a hotel catering to business folks, complete with pool and lounge chairs. After sandwiches and cold drinks, we had a bit of time before leaving and each found a lounge chair in the shade. We promptly fell asleep and it was a wonderful Caribbean nap. We spent the afternoon at Grace Children’s Hospital, doing one last craft, storytelling, and saying good-bye. Kathleen brought yards of colored ribbons and they were soon braided and made into bracelets and necklaces or wrapped around foreheads Ninja-style. Kathleen told the story of Jack and the Beanstalk with Robinson, one of the hospital staff, translating with equal expression and drama. It was great fun! It was difficult saying good-bye to the children but hope to be back. At this writing, we have celebrated Holy Communion under the stars and are now singing into the sky and gentle evening breeze. Tomorrow we fly out around noon and begin the task of reentering our own worlds with hearts changed and imaginations inspired. Thank you, Team! Thank you, Keith! Thank you, wonderful people all over Haiti! Lynne
